Where: The Student Commons.
What: 10-minute reading slots are available.
You can bring your favorite banned or challenged book, or you may borrow one of ours. I can also advise you if you have questions about what you could read.
We will also be collecting books for Midwest Pages to Prisoners -- bring your gently used books to donate to the book drive. Brownies, chocolate truffles, and other goodies will be provided for all readers and those donating cash or books to Midwest Pages to Prisoners.

Well, folks, I’m so sorry that I’m going to miss the open mic day this year, but I’ll be out of town. For the past 2 years, though, I selected passages from the Harry Potter series because those books were at the top of the list of the most frequently challenged books between 2000 and 2009. For more information about that, you can visit the American Library Association Website and find lists of banned and challenged books year by year.

For Read Across America Day 2011, I read the passage where Harry broke through the barrier at Platform 9 ¾ for the first time and got his first glimpse of the Hogwarts Express. In 2012, I read the passage where Harry went shopping in Diagon Alley and purchased his first magic wand. This year, you’ll just have to imagine me reading the passage where Hagrid arrives at the Hut-on-the-Rock in the Sea to tell Harry that he is a wizard and that he’ll soon be heading to Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry…

The reading was a success with 25 different readers (reading everything from Galileo to the Bible and from Dr. Seuss to Lady Chatterley). I want to thank everyone who participated (readers and listeners alike!).
Christine Brandel, advisor for the Creative Writing Club, reports:
"In the end, the Creative Writing Club, in partnership with ENGL 223, had a successful community service project: we collected five boxes of books for the Friends of the Monroe County Public Library and raised $13, provided copies of form letters, and collected 4 boxes of books for Midwest Pages to Prisoners.
Thanks for those who volunteered to help--all the donations are now on their way to their new homes!"
And the brownies and truffles were fabulous! Thanks to Chef Jeff and his students for the donation of goodies for readers and participants.
